Facebook – Wannabeas and Geeks

Facebook. Or how I learned to waste my time online and not care. Out of nowhere, and without invitation, Facebook showed up and it’s planning to stay. In just a few months, it has become Brescias’ most popular club, with over 240 members, and it keeps growing faster that the death toll in Iraq and the number of illegal aliens that walk the Arizona Desert.

Facebook is a website for students where they share pictures and can send instant messages, either public or private. Students have their own “profile,” where they are able to say whatever they want. Also, students can create and join clubs. The most popular club at Brescia is “Sr. Rose Jean Fan Club” with 81 members and 86 groupies. Other popular clubs are “You've Been Shocked,” and “It's Cool to Go Braless.”

So, what is Facebook good for? Actually, not much. It’s just another internet blog where people write what they think to whoever wants to read it. It’s sad the amount of time people spend writing instead of reading. It’s frighteningly similar to real life, where everybody talks but nobody listens.

Another useless use for Facebook is for chicks to feel top notch for having ‘friends.’ When you see someone the profile of someone you know, you add him or her as your friend. But these wannabe popular girls keep adding people they don’t even talk to as friends. Some list over 120 friends. Still, they only talk to the same little group of five or six people they always share a table with in the cafeteria. Yeah, keep adding ‘virtual’ friends instead of interacting with real people; that’s way more fulfilling.

Regarding Facebook safety, it’s not a big deal. The only thing people should not do is publish their phone number. And about the idea that Facebook promotes alcohol abuse among students; well, that may be true. Because everybody knows that no one drinks more beer that geeks that spend six hours a day online waiting for someone else to notice their newest cool picture.
